American taxpayers have lost at least $1 million to a phone scam in which callers portray themselves as Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agents, the IRS inspector general said Thursday. The agency has received more than 20, 000 complaints about the swindle in what the U.S. Treasury department reported is the largest of its kind they’ve ever seen.
